Ginger Snaps fresh out of the oven for our first annual cookie party

Whew! The last week had been hectic! Holiday parties, markets, the busiest week of my online shop for the year, studio drop ins, getting ready for my whole family to arrive Sunday and Monday, girls night, and everything else that comes with this time of year and with recent events. Lest you fear that I am feeling bad for myself, worry not...I just returned from Anthropologie after some extreme retail therapy.  Between decorating the house, buying presents and a few "therapy" sessions, I feel incredibly confident that I have done my part to stimulate the local economy this month.  Your welcome, Austin.

The ladies in all our ugly sweater glory!

Adam and I hosted our first annual "Eat cookies in your ugly sweater party" this past Sunday.  It was super fun and as you can by some of our guests, pretty amazing!  The downside was that I couldn't get anyone to take cookies home with them, so I have been sustaining on dessert for the entire week...well maybe thats not a downside.  Note how we are all looking a different iphone cameras in these photos...oops!

The men looking spiffy!

There's a tiny lull for a few days...Adam is out of town snow boarding, I have no plans until the Saturday market and everything is ready for the fam coming Monday.  Which means I can bliss out in my studio tonight without stressing about getting holiday orders out...hallelujah!

I have never been one for holiday decorating.  I rarely have been at my own house on the day of the holiday and really didn't see the point.  Well this year I am not only hosting out family Christmas at my house (which means my mom and sisters are flying in from Boston, NYC and San Fran so it needs feel Christmas-y when they get here), but I have also decided to have an Ugly Sweater/Cookie Party.

It started innocently enough by borrowing a fake tree from a friend, putting a few poinsettias around the house and vaguely discussing lights outside with Adam.  Then we went shopping for ornaments. And stockings. And a wreath. And a Snowman made from branches (because we have no snow it can't be white, so its brown?? Guy logic...whatever) with lights in it for the lawn.  When we finally stopped shopping and got home, I set up the tree and immediately we realized that we'd need a bigger tree.  Then the scent of live trees from the evergreen candles we also bought made us decide to get a real tree...and more lights (which meant another trip to the store as we needed a tree stand too).  Armed with so many new holiday themed decorations, we felt comfortable putting our decorating on hold for a few days while I was focusing on a big show.  Yesterday however, I it dawned on us that we are having over 30 people to the house this weekend, and that we had to get our tushes in gear.  So off we went...

I played a lot of "is this our tree?" but they were all about the same size and Adam was obsessed with the first tree we saw, so really I was just posing with trees.  Btw, it's a freezing 60 degrees out so I took it as an excuse to wear my beloved winter wear.

Our tree getting ready to come home with us...its a little imperfect, but as I said, Adam was obsessed with it so this was "the one".

I of course refused to touch the tree as I was wearing beloved winter wear, but luckily Adam needed no help at all and was a champ at tying it to the roof. We got it home in one piece and I set to work with the lights and decorating.  Pausing to also hang art work around the house as that too needs to be done this week and eat candy.

At this point in the tree saga, I realized that we needed more ornaments for the tree and more lights for outside, so I went back to the store...again.  By now most of the ornaments were cleared out, and wrapping supplies have taken their place, but I managed to get half a cart full. And holiday themed hand towels for the powder room, and cute to go boxes for the cookie party, and cocktail napkins, and then I stopped at another store for those white poinsettias down there and fresh greens for the mantle vase.  That's when I realized that there may be a good reason why I have avoided holiday decorating...I get waaaaaay to into it.  Alas, when the rest of the new ornaments were on the tree and all the needles and boxes were cleared away, we turned off the lights...

And decided that it was all absolutely worth it. (and that this photo showed an empty spot on the tree which I fixed so don't you worry about that).

look up

I am trying to enjoy myself as much as possible this December.  Its my super busy, crazy time of year, but it's also my favorite.  I love the hustle, the bustle, the excited anticipation of the holidays and the new year.  I however often forget to breathe, to take care of myself and to stop in the midst of the whirlwind, look around and think...this is what I love the most.  On Saturday night after day one of the Cherrywood Art Fair, I picked up Adam on my way home and we grabbed an extremely quick bite at Opa (amazing Greek food and more often than not, live music outside). While waiting for my gyro, I snapped a few photos of one of the musicians with her phone so she could fb, instagram etc and laughed to myself that we're all the same.  A few minutes later as I was enjoying sitting still for a few minutes while I ate dinner,  I looked up...and paused. It's amazing that such a beautiful and inspirational moment you can happen if you just take the time to stop for a second.

Ephemicropolis by Peter Root (made of 100,000 staples)

I love when an artist takes a completely common place, every day item and turns it into something so amazing that you have remind yourself what it is.  Even better is imagining what the process must have been like to get them from using a stapler to creating the mini city above.  Pretty amazing.

It's no secret that I am obsessed with twinkle lights.  I have a pinterest board dedicated to them and designed a line of jewelry inspired by them.  I have held back from having them in the house year round so that the winter months are more magical, but Adam is encouraging of their existence, so that may change.  This week I have visited Target twice to buy more and I haven't even trimmed the tree yet!  I'm a bit nervous to begin as I fear that this will happen...

It will start innocently enough...I'll stand there with that first strand of lights and wonder if I should begin with the tree or the mantle.

Then I'll be inspired to get creative...do something "fun" with the lights...look how pretty!

Once the creativity is flowing, I may start to get ambitious...covering vast areas normally not associated with twinkle light decorating.

Which will then escalate to even more bizarre placements as I get caught up in the frenzy of sparkle!!

Finally, I will go completely over board and fill the house to it's brim, causing blackouts throughout the neighborhood from twinkle light abuse and collapse in a pile under the wonderment that I have created...possibly fueled by too much candy while I worked.

I however will get to admire an amazing installation of light while lying there on the floor, so at least I'll have that.  Let the holidays begin!!!

It's official, the holiday season is upon us!  I usually leave the tree trimming to my mom and head to her house for the festivities, I therefore have never been bitten by the decorating bug in December. Well all that has changed this year! I am hosting Christmas at my house and my mom and three sisters will be flying in to Austin from Boston, New York City and San Francisco on Christmas Eve.  It started innocently enough...a little tree, a few poinsettias, some lights on the mantle and then BAM! We went to Target last night. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda...we're going to need a bigger tree.  Anyway, now that I'm into the holiday spirit I wanted to do a themed giveaway, however I really don't have anything that screamed "holiday!". So I decided to go with a classic.  Because really when you get down to it, the holidays are all about the classics.

You don't get more classic Manic Trout than with the Kanya Hot Stuff Necklace.  Featuring a bold 2.75" wide Elephant and bright red cherry quartz, the Hot Stuff Necklace is one of the most famous of the Manic Trout designs, having been worn by Jessica Szohr as Vanessa on Gossip Girl, so fancy! Want to win your very own Hot Stuff Necklace?  Its super simple...

leaf

We finally have fall leaves in Texas!

1. Even people who grew up in Texas find it weird to have 80 degree temps in December and get all giddy, for some reason that comforts me when I say to myself 15 times a day...it's 80 degrees...in December!

2. As soon as you move and settle into an awesome house, you forget all about the horribleness of packing and moving.

3. Even though I'm glad I did not haul all of my books from NY to TX almost two years ago, I still miss them terribly.

4. Dressing up for dinner for no reason on a Sunday night gives it a wonderful sense of occasion.

5. During a night of staring at a particular fish in a restaurant tank, the subject of fish sleeping came up.  Do they? I'll answer this one as I looked it up. Yes, but it's more of an energy saving state with their eyes open (only Sharks have eyelids).  Some have to keep moving to have water flow through their mouths so they can breath, but they may sleep while moving...that's still an unknown mystery. Some build nests or hide in coral and under logs  Some float motionless in the middle of water, some float near the bottom.  Some sleep during the day, some at night and some for little bursts throughout teh day. I could go on...its apparently a pretty big subject, but lets just conclude that yes, all fish sleep in some capacity.

6. Bringing fresh flowers into the house every week is pretty amazing, even if they're just the grocery store ones.

7. Undercooked banana bread is only good when warm from the oven...after that its just a soggy mess.

8. The same brand and style of shoe can fit differently from color to color.  This has happened more than once...how and why is this possible?

9. Both dogs and ponies will enjoy the paper on a cupcake as much as the cake itself.  True story, I've experienced both.

10. I am already so acclimated to Texas that when its 60 degrees out, I find myself putting on a sweater, vest, scarf and sometimes even a coat and gloves...amazing how fast I got to that point.  Even more amusing is when I talk to my sister in NY on a fall day, if its dipped to 60 here and risen t0 60 there, she'll see people in shorts go by and I'll see people in parkas.

manic trout, her daily muse, most amazing cookie

The most amazing cookie in the world

It's been so log since I did a Sum it post!  It's about time, but I feel pretty confident in stating that I am getting back into a schedule after the wedding/moving chaos...even in the midst of holiday madness, I'm in a groove.  Hooray for that...I love a good schedule.  So now that lifes back to "normal", here's what I've been up this week...

WORKING ON: Stock for Holiday shows and markets and my sneakpeeq holiday sale, which debuts on Dec 8th!

THINKING ABOUT: The upcoming year and what my business and personal goals are.  I'm excited about plans that will have me paying extra attention to the blog and am preparing for it by setting up a fb page for Her Daily Muse. If you'd care to "like" it, you may do so here!

EATING: Too much.  Dinners out, breakfast out, mini cupcakes from Hey Cupcake and those amazingly soft cookies from the bakery section of the grocery store that I (very late to the game)I discovered last spring (yes, thats one in the photo above), beware...they're highly addictive!

THANKFUL FOR: So many wonderful friends whom I've met in Austin...I love you guys!

PLANNING FOR: My mom and three sisters spending Christmas with me here in Austin, squeeeeeee!!!!

READING: The House of Peine by Sarah-Kate Lynch, oddly the second book in a row about France.

So...how was your week?
