The amazing Steve DeMent photographing the Manic Trout Spring/Summer 2013 Line.

I have at different times in the life of Manic Trout, hired all sorts of people to help grow the business grow.  From holiday help to assistants to interns to publicists, I have delegated on many levels.  When I still was in the day job phase, a great deal of help was necessary as my own time to give was limited, although the last "day" job I had only took up one and half week days, it still took me out of the studio an average of 40 hours a week.  So you it was necessary to have help.  When I moved to Texas I obviously was not physically near all of my help from New York and as I went full time with Manic Trout, I had to get used to not having the income from my day job to help pay for it anyway.  I have however, grown in the last year and a half enough to hire a PR firm again and have begun adding other professionals to my arsenal of help as well.  I have so far though, avoided an assistant.

Am I crazy for not wanting an assistant again?  I loved having one for many aspects of the business and I actually miss my intern who was an amazing help with jewelry production more than I can ever express, but I am avoiding having someone in the studio with me everyday.  I am one of those people who is leaps and bounds more productive when alone.  If you've ever been with me in person, you would know that I am a TALKER.  I will talk to the checkout lady at the grocery store for 20 minutes about the weather.  It's just part of who I am BUT, it means I get nothing done when someone is in the studio with me.  So I just keep delegating everything else.

As I said, I have someone who does the PR for Manic Trout, a CPA who does my taxes (last year was the first year I have ever had someone else do my taxes....ummm, why the heck did I wait so long to do THAT??), a Chief Marketing Officer and a team of reps for the Sorority Collection, a cleaning woman (anyone who argues that this is not helpful for work, imagine never having tho think about cleaning your bathroom again!) and as of yesterday, I finally let a pro take my product photographs.  This last one was hard to do.  I have always taken my own product shots, but I realized that I was just not doing the best possible job, so it was time to pass the torch.  I also eased my way into this by working with the photographer on a bunch of photo shoots over the last year so I know we work well together and he knows Manic Trout. The next addition to my arsenal will be someone to do piece work in their own home to assist with production.  I am just about to the point where even doing this full time, I can't keep up with it.

It's like in You've Got Mail (my favorite movie to watch when I'm sick, so I've seen it a ridiculous amount of times) when Dave Chappelle (and how random is it that he's in this movie?) is talking about dating and he says “I always take a relationship to the next level. If that works out, I take it to the next level after that, until I finally reach that level when it becomes absolutely necessary for me to leave.” Well besides the leaving bit, it's spot on...when I get to the next level I'll begin considering how to muzzle myself.

Who do you have in your arsenal of help?

Sunday was one of those days that I got stuff DONE. Including packing away Christmas until next year.

I've been having extreme days lately.  One day I will check off every thing on my to do list and feel like the champion of getting things done and then the next it feels like the minutes are being yanked away from me so quickly that poof it's time for bed and it feels like I got nothing done.  This is not necessarily bad, it's just overwhelming when the things I need to do end up being much more than the things I can actually get to.  January is actually a super busy month for Manic Trout as the Spring line comes together and this week especially, the unexpected items which pop up in my inbox seem to be multiplying.  Thank goodness for the days when I feel on top of my game, I need more of those please, universe!  I have a feeling this is going to be a long month.

I've gone back and forth about these posts.  I stopped them for awhile because I was trying to post only original content and therefore only photos that I took, but recently I had to go through the back log of posts and realized how much I liked seeing them.  So they are returning...enjoy.

A peek at the Spring Line debuting at Manic Trout in March!

A peek at the Spring Line debuting at Manic Trout in March!

This week contained both the last of 2012 and the first of 2013.  It also was a week that I looked over 10 years of business and declared that after 1.5 years of being full time at Manic Trout that I was ready to ROAR my way into 2013 and that I wanted to push any last wisps of fear aside and jump to new heights this year.  Well, on January 2nd, the news that I had three (THREE!) necklaces in a magazine I have been trying to get into to for 6 years was all the push that I needed.  I immediately applied (and was accepted yesterday, yay!) at what I know as biggest ready to wear fashion and accessories trade show in the US.  Kind of want to throw up as it's in 6 weeks and I have only done teeny tiny regional trade shows before...nothing like this and nothing where I have to ship my booth out ahead of me.  I am however, more excited than nervous and may have already stopped sleeping in anticipation.  I'll keep you posted...but until I know more...here's this weeks Sum It Up...

WORKING ON: Finishing up the Spring 2013 Line! Finally it's come together in a crashing wave of inspiration.

THINKING ABOUT: Obviously the trade show, which I realized was consuming me when I started a random conversation about the pros and cons of driving to Vegas with my bank teller this morning. (there was only one pro...I could take as much as I wanted for my booth)

ANTICIPATING:  Finishing up the Spring line and seeing it al together!

LISTENING TO:  I tried a few new stations on Pandora this week, but this morning ended up right back at the Bird and The Bee.

EATING: I just devoured an amazing Thundercloud Sub (Veggie Delite), they are everywhere here in Austin.

THANKFUL FOR:  The support of my loving husband who has to deal with my freaking out about upcoming things that scare me (and is willing to help fund really big new ventures for Manic Trout).

PLANNING FOR:  Duh.

READING: Upside Down Inside Out by Monica McInerney...at first I was having book deja vu, I kept thinking I've read it before, but it changed direction and now I'm just enjoying a nice fluffy book.

WATCHING: Last night I watched the entire 5th season of Californication while in my studio last night.  I love that show so much, why are the seasons so short? It pains me when it ends.

Have a great weekend, and if you're in Austin, stop by the Manic Trout tent on S Congress tomorrow!

That's me in the last hour of 2012, pumped for the new year!

This last week-ish I have been so fortunate to be surrounded with so many of my nearest and dearest.  Between family and amazing friends, I felt like I was in a little cocoon bubble of happiness for 10 days.  I was thinking about that cocoon bubble this morning and that being in it was the perfect way to embark on my goals for the year. I won't bore you with the details of these goals, because as you can imagine, every year I have a list of goals for Manic Trout and they are not very exciting to anyone but me and my fellow business nerds.  As far as accomplishing these goals goes, I reach some, decide to go a different direction with some and are completely defeated by some, that's just the way it goes.

It's my little tradition to take January 1st each year to go over the past year with the business, and this being my first entire year working only on Manic Trout, I had a lot to review.  I took risks, started new endeavors and learned a lot from both successes and failures just as I knew I would.  Last night though it was a bit different than January 1st of the past, bolstered by my cocoon bubble, I for the first time did not let myself dwell on the negative, but really focused on the great accomplishments I achieved (such as increasing sales by 33%!!).  I also learned a lot about how I set goals and the path to achieving them and well, let's just say that I'm as excited about my goal making and implementing the steps to make them happen as I am to accomplish them!  At the end of the review, I felt proud of my work and ready to take on the new year.  So here's to 2013 and the importance of your cocoon bubble!

Well it's official, 2012 has come a close.  As with every year, there have been ups and downs and this year I seemed to experience it to the extreme on both ends.  I always like to end the year looking over what I've accomplished and what I never got around to and set goals for the year ahead.  However, 2013 is an extra special year for me as I celebrate my 10th year owning Manic Trout in January, how crazy is that?!? I spent some time today going through the blog archives (which I began in 2006) and visually seeing how far both Manic Trout and I have come.  It was so much fun going down memory lane, that I thought it would be fun to share a photo from each of the last 12 months.  Enjoy the recap and have a Happy New Year!!

Amusing myself while waiting for sisters at the Domain

I had high hopes of getting things done (like blogging) while my family was here all week, but well...I'm sure you know how it goes.  The first arrived on Sunday, the last left a couple of hours ago and I didn't want to break away from what little time we all have together to do anything else. We had such a great time...cooking, eating, shopping, chatting the nights away, eating...it was a wonderful week.  So aplogies for only posting a Sum it up this week, but I'm sure you understand.

WORKING ON: As I have done nothing in my studio since last Saturday I'm just get back into the swing of things.  A bunch of jewelry was pulled for a photo shoot today though, fun!

THINKING ABOUT: The last year, and what will come in the next.

ANTICIPATING: Figuring our what on earth to do for New Years Eve.  All of our energy went into planning for the past week...totally forgot about NYE. Also facing the fact that as Adam has the flu, I'm next in line.  Ugh.

LISTENING TO: The Wild Belle Station on Pandora.

EATING: It's time to walk away from the sugar for awhile.  Way, way waaaaaaay too much.  I'm pretty stoked for all of the leftovers in the fridge right now though.

THANKFUL FOR: Having such an amazing family.

PLANNING FOR: A pretty awesome first few months of the new year are already in the works! Some great press, an exciting new project and the Spring line!

READING: Local Knowledge by Liza Gyllenhaal...so far so good.  If I get sick, the good part will be I'll get to read it.

WATCHING: No joke, we watched Pitch Perfect 5 times this week...each and every one of us became addicted.

My 2 year old self...just chillin under the tree on a bear skin rug (procured by my paternal grandfather)

My 2 year old self...just chillin under the tree on a bear skin rug (procured by my paternal grandfather)

Its been a looong week...one where I wish each day was filled with moments like the one above instead of working like a mad woman in the studio for the last push of the year.  My 2 year old self really knew how to kick back and relax in style!  However my 35 year old self chose to have the girls over and eat more cookies while chatting away for hours on end mid week instead.  I can confidently say that it was just as fun as laying naked on a bear skin rug!

WORKING ON: Holiday production is done!!! I have the last market for Christmas tomorrow, and then all focus is on finishing the Spring/Summer 2013 collection!

THINKING ABOUT: If all of the Manic Trout packages will arrive on time for Tuesday...fingers triple crossed.

ANTICIPATING: Adam coming home from snow boarding tomorrow, my mom arriving Sunday and my three sisters on Monday!!

LISTENING TO: Its embarrassing, but I'm still on the Bird and The Bee Station.

EATING: Cookies...and cookies...oh and these white chocolate and candy cane Hershey Kisses that are amazing.

THANKFUL FOR:  My wonderful friends who I have been having a ball with and my awesome family who I get to see so soon!

PLANNING FOR:  What to do when family is here...2 have lived here and 2 have visited, so all of the normal "you have to see this when your in Austin" stuff has been done. Hmmmmm.

READING: Rock On by Dan Kennedy, about working for a record label...it's pretty great.

WATCHING: Damages in my studio...Glenn Close plays evil oh so very well and Freaks and Geeks as my watch an episode at 1am when I leave my studio guilty pleasure watching....because it's that good.

Have a great weekend!

Ginger Snaps fresh out of the oven for our first annual cookie party

Whew! The last week had been hectic! Holiday parties, markets, the busiest week of my online shop for the year, studio drop ins, getting ready for my whole family to arrive Sunday and Monday, girls night, and everything else that comes with this time of year and with recent events. Lest you fear that I am feeling bad for myself, worry not...I just returned from Anthropologie after some extreme retail therapy.  Between decorating the house, buying presents and a few "therapy" sessions, I feel incredibly confident that I have done my part to stimulate the local economy this month.  Your welcome, Austin.

The ladies in all our ugly sweater glory!

Adam and I hosted our first annual "Eat cookies in your ugly sweater party" this past Sunday.  It was super fun and as you can by some of our guests, pretty amazing!  The downside was that I couldn't get anyone to take cookies home with them, so I have been sustaining on dessert for the entire week...well maybe thats not a downside.  Note how we are all looking a different iphone cameras in these photos...oops!

The men looking spiffy!

There's a tiny lull for a few days...Adam is out of town snow boarding, I have no plans until the Saturday market and everything is ready for the fam coming Monday.  Which means I can bliss out in my studio tonight without stressing about getting holiday orders out...hallelujah!
