SummerLine

glimpse of what's in the works for the summer line

The past few weeks have just blown by in a rush of...well I don't know what.  I've been busy.  My "other" job has me planning a handful of events coming up in the next few weeks and  I have been working my tushy off trying to get the Summer line (which is REALLY late) finished.  I got all caught up in a tizzy of design and expanded the thing so hugely that I had to not only wait for supplies, but am still making samples.  I wanted to have it all finished and to my publicist two days ago, but as I still need to finish samples, photo them, name them, price them and make line sheets...well its going to be another week, at least.  The only good part is that I am madly in love with what I designed, is that bad to say?  Well even if it is, I'm saying it.   I also have a trunk show in two weeks and feel so unprepared, but honestly I know I am much more prepared then I think on that one...I just do so few shows that I am always overwhelmed at the thought of them.

Besides work, the board I serve on has two events coming up in April which I am involved in planning, not much has to be done, but all of a sudden I have multiple events to either run or attend every week end in April.  Why is everything in April?  Some I am looking forward to more then others, such as both causes which I support and donate auction items to are having events, so its more networking then anything else, I'm actually excited about them.  Gillian and I are going to Austin to visit Holly for three nights to check out her new home, yay!!!   I also have a meet up with my Ladies Who Launch group in Manhattan, I havn't seen those girls in so long, I can't wait!!

In the midst of all of this, the website I took over last year and have somehow put off redoing, basically a local directory for the village I live in, needs to be finished now, as in yesterday.  Honestly though, I can't even think about that right now, as I am smack dab in the middle of a six week online business class which I decided at the last minute to enroll in.  I actually am totally into it, and part of the class is networking with the 520 students online, and well...we know how I feel about making new friends!

Speaking of which, I have made a lovely new friend, Julia.  We were next to each other at a show I did for the holidays.  Julia makes the most awesome felted bags.  We talk shop endlessly, I heart our new friendship.  I have also recently acquired a an email pen pal, and we write long emails back and forth venting about business, its quite nice actually.  I have been really lucky to have connected with a couple of wonderful women this year, its making the endless hours I toil away at Manic Trout and all of this other stuff seem less crazy.  You know why, because these chicks get it...and they're doing it too.

I have two large cork boards in my studio that I try to update once a month with the pages of fashion magazines which I subscribe to rip apart.  In the past few month I have noticed a trend developing with one board showcasing very babe like photos...heavy on the big hair, black eyeliner and cleavage.  The other board is usually more themed on color...or like month, the lack of.   I was in need of a dose of inspiration so I redid them last night...

Now I get to spend the next month gazing at all of this inspirational loveliness!

SickMac

My sad, sick macbook pro.

I had to drop my computer off to get fixed today.  It's sick...which makes me sad...and a bit stressed.  Last summer it began developing lines through the right side of the screen (after only 18 months!).  As its 17", I just worked around it.  But alas, I can't ignore it forever.  So I have found a place where they will fix it in 2 days instead of a week like the Genius Bar quoted.  However...in my world, 2 days is a crazy long time to not have a computer.  Thank goodness for smart phones, so I at least have email and internet...but its not the same.  Well, at least I'll get the last of the Spring/Summer 2011 samples done without the distraction of computer work!  Cross your fingers that its a quick and warranty covered problem!

I am in the process of creating the next editions to the Mermaid Parade Necklace line.  I figured it would be fun to include you in the process so you can appreciate the start to finish of one of my favorite designs.  As I have already done the actual designing of this piece, I can kind of jump right into the process, knowing all the steps to come.  Not as much fun as figuring out a new design, but much more productive!

Jacqueline steaming a scarf

Sadly the above scarf is too small for a Mermaid Parade Necklace, but don't fret, I have ideas for that size too!  My assistant, Jacqueline patiently steamed the wrinkles out of the most recent batch of scarves I have procured and we then sorted them into 3 piles...

MPN_Stage1_Scarves

there are 3 categories of vintage scarves to turn into jewelry

The 3 categories are:

  1. Squares too small for Mermaid Parades, which is heartbreaking as this size seems to have the best patterns.
  2. Large squares (at least 32" square) to be used for Mermaid Parades.
  3. Rectangular Scarves that I can use for Mermaid Parades, but will only make a few, so I want to use them for something else instead.

Once steamed and sorted, I selected 6 scarves I wanted to turn into necklaces next and started to work on color choices for the beads...

bowls of beads ready to turn into glittering strands

This is the hardest part by far of these necklaces, I have TONS of colors to work with and its a bit daunting deciding what will or will not work.  Sometimes I end up changing the colors after the samples are made if they don't work all together as an actual necklace...

No that the colors are all selected, its time to get busy making the sample necklaces!

Check back soon to see the next phase...

Hemingway served as the inspiration for my inspire-er

I had a stiff neck this week end, as I often get.  I tend to carry all of my stress and tension in my shoulders and neck and this creates all sorts of headache, shoulder and neck pain and stiff neck situations for me.  One of the reasons I began yoga was to try and work on this issue a bit and although its helping, I still tend to abuse myself when I work.  The hours and hours spent alternating between my jewelry desk and my laptop result in my looking down most of the time I'm working.

I have recently noticed that switching from a desktop to a laptop has drawn my eyes lower down while working and as a result I look down even more now.  Even though I have a 20" mac flat screen monitor sitting on my desk just begging for me to use it, but I hardly plug into it so little good it does me.

Yesterday I was asked how I hurt my neck, and after I explained all of the above, I was given a bit of food for thought.  It seems that the gentleman whom I was speaking is a writer and not only experienced neck issues from toiling away the hours writing at his desk, but had developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists which required surgery.  After his recovery, he decided to rethink how he worked to prevent further injury.  He heard about Hemingway always standing to write and decided to give it a try.  It took some time to get used to, but he was sold when he realized he could still write for 4 to 5 hours at a time while standing and was not hurting himself in the process.  After this realization, he proceeded to change his entire office over to standing height and never looked back.

Apparently, this is not a new concept and after a quick google search, I found all sorts of people who talk about working while standing.  If you're interested, I enjoyed this article about it.  From reading the comments, I am hoping that my work with yoga has helped teach me how to stand better then I sit, as really its all apples and oranges if you're posture is bad when standing.  It also seems that alternating sitting and standing while working is ideal.

I am incredibly intrigued by this idea.  I always have stood to paint, I fill orders standing at a counter and this winter began standing to sew as I used the order filling station to set up the sewing machine on.  It actually will be  easy to try as having that counter means that I already have a suitable place to put my computer.  Tuesdays and Wednesdays are my big days in the studio...I typically work about 17 hours on those days, with a few breaks to walk the dog, eat and exercise.  It's the perfect time to try out a new process as I can both immerse myself in a new method and have ample time to get used to it.  Right now I work in my studio while standing maybe 5% of the time.  I think I'll aim to adjust that percentage to 50% and see how my neck fares at that point.

Do you work standing up?  What are your thoughts on doing office and computer work this way?

I can't even count how many times I have been in the midst of busy times and said to myself "self, why on earth were you not more productive in all of these projects you keep thinking up when it was slow?? There is no time now you ninny!".  I admit, there are certain tasks that cannot be done when business is slow, as some require sales to need them...but then there is the category of, lets call it...cool things I wish to do that are not necessary but I think would make Manic Trout a better place.   Well, as its not quite Valentines day shopping yet and due to all of this snow and a sudden blank spot in my social life, I have nothing but time on my hands right now.  So this week I have been working on a few of these projects!!

First, I cleaned out the studio a bit...but that's just good old common sense.  Then I cleaned out the inventory...which means that there is a SALE going on!  I finally got around to putting the new labels on all of the jewelry...well, my assistant has, but its getting done!  I got around to posting the spring fashion preview on the blog and updated the press page on the website and facebook page.

I (and its about time) started to tackle the redoing of Millbrook NY Online, which I took over this past Spring and have just been patching up the holes since then.  It however needs a bit of an overhaul and I dug right in the other day!  This one will take some time, but at least I got started.

My proudest accomplishment this week was going through the Out & About photos and starting to add model images to the jewelry on the web site.  I have been putting this off FOREVER!!!  The best part of this project is that I started it to plan for the 2011 Out & About series!!  That's right my dear friends...in a few short weeks, the first Out & About of this year will debut...and it will be AWESOME!!  Which is great on a few levels...

  1. Out & Abouts are super fun to do.
  2. I have holes to fill for model shots
  3. I am always inspired after a photo shoots

ok...back to my coffee...must go to day job for a couple of hours and then yoga...no more fun projects until after I do all of this and get today's orders out.  Hmmm, I wonder which dream slow season project I'll tackle next??  On deck are a database of designs in use...including materials and blueprints.  I dipped my toe in that one..talk about a HUGE project.  I'll admit...it scares me a bit just thinking about that one.  Also up next is an online catalog/magazine of manic trout...fun!

Inspiration Board "Babes", November 2010

Every month or so I rip up a month of magazine and paper the boards in my studio with a fresh dose of inspiration.

Inspiration Board "Black & White", November 2010

I let the images move me to what the themes of the month are...this month I had an abundance of babes as usual...and as usual there was an emphasis on a nod to the 50's in style.  The other themes that came out of the carnage was Black & White...and scribbles as well!

Light Tent 2

I didn't realize how much jewelry I have designed that needed to be photographed until I started getting it all out today!  Much of it is for 2011 such as the Peacock Blue Bling Rings, a new bracelet design and a new collection of critter necklaces.  But don't you fret...there are goodies coming out next week as well...just in time for the holidays!  Oh, so exciting!!

Sadly, the journey to the web site has just begun and I have a few weeks of work before they get to you, but the new goodies are scheduled to land on November 23rd! (make sure you're signed up for the newsletter on the right of the blog to be the first to find out and to be entered to win one of the new pieces in the monthly drawing!!)

light tent 1

Today was a photo day...which means I drag out the light tent, lights, tripod and accessories and get to work.  I will later tonight start on photo-shopping, and as I suck at photography this is a lengthy process for me.  After I make the photos presentable for both print and web, I put together the line sheets, figure out names, prices etc.   Once that's all done, I send the whole shebang off to the publicist along with both hi res and web images and a sample of each piece.

THEN I get to work on the web site, writing descriptions, uploading the images, doing a bit of seo and all of that good stuff...and voila...new jewelry for you!!
