I kind of thought/hoped/wished that without a day job this year that the chaos of the holidays would be much less but alas I seem to be unable to avoid being super busy.  Mostly because after a few First Thursdays as my trial period, I have been accepted as a regular vendor at the Gibson Street Artisan Market (the corner of S Congress & Gibson St), yay!  I been spending the weekends set up in my tent on Gibson St and have done a few shows mid week as well this month.   Which means that a great deal of my time has been spent packing up the car, unpacking in the lot, setting up, breaking down, packing up the car...going home and making jewelry to restock...getting up...unpacking in the lot, setting up, breaking down...you get where that is headed.  Even with the time spent packing up, it has however been wonderful to see familiar faces every weekend and being able to talk shop with my fellow artisans at the shows.

The rest of my time has been spent doing my own holiday shopping, baking and planning.  Oh yeah and did I mention that I am getting married?  Adam and I are engaged, woo hoo!!!  We started planning the wedding in early October but he was traveling a great deal the last couple of months and we were away for Thanksgiving so we kept putting everything off.  However, as we want to get married next September, we were getting behind on the plans and unfortunately have had to cram in a bunch of wedding related meetings in the midst of the chaos these past couple of weeks...it's been hectic to say the least.  The only reason I am keeping my sanity is that these are all really wonderful reasons to be busy so although I may have a melt down here and there due to stress, I am otherwise doing it all with a smile!  How has your holiday season been going?

RedRoadI freak out before shows.  I freaked out before events I planned in my other profession as well.  But not nearly as much as I freak out before shows.  Especially before shows I've never been to and that will be different than what I have done before (I will be outside...at night!).  Most especially when I have had waaaay to much coffee and got attacked by fire ants while packing the car (how do you stop the burning of the bites???). The freaking out stops the minute the show starts usually...so at least I have only a few more hours of spazzing to go.

If you're in the Austin area, tonight is First Thursday!  Manic Trout and I will be at the Gibson Street Artists Market of off South Congress (by the dogs) from 5pm - 9pm.   I'd love to see familiar faces!

I figure if I can't experience fall, I will at least live it though the blog...because I can.

CrunchyFeet
I have a crazy busy next few days ahead of me, but filled with so many fun things that I'm all antsy with anticipation.  Tomorrow I am participating in Austins First Thursday, which I think is basically a bug party on South Congress where all the restaurants, shops, and locals pour out into the streets the first Thursday of each month and hang out.  If you're in the area, I have been approved to be in the Gibson Street Artists Market (by the dogs) so come by and visit!!

Friday I have a lunch meeting for a new project I am working on and then coffee with a new friend, squee!!

Saturday, Adam and I are off to South Padre to visit his parents and on Sunday, my sister Gillian arrives in South Padre too!!!  I'm so excited to see her, it's such a change to go from seeing family all the time to only every few months, if that.  I can't wait!!!

I am finally getting the recap together from Fashion Week. As my apartment will not be ready until September 10th, I have been staying with Adam...and he moved this past weekend. Chaos is beyond what my life has been.

I however am finally enjoying a few quiet hours of solitude and catching up as much as I can. So I can now share how the Jewelry Showcase went! Note that I sadly took very few photos that night as it was crazy busy...I'm pretty bummed about that...but what can you do.

I was invited about a month ago to be part of the Jewelry Showcase during Austin Fashion Week, the showcase is a curated event of the best 16 or so designers from around the country.  I was BEYOND nervous leading up to the event and to make my stress levels soar, my moving pod had not arrived and I had no display.  I spent the few days before scrambling around at Ikea, Home Depot and Michaels trying to gather materials to build a new presentation. I had no idea how it would look or if it would even work when set up. Without the pod, I also had nothing to wear. Adam being the awesome boyfriend that he is, declared that he wanted to buy me a new dress for that night so Holly and I set off on a mission that morning which took us to 7 stores before we found a dress that fit right, but we did it!

Austin Fashion Week Manic Trout 05The event was at the Driskill Hotel in Austin, a historic and gorgeous back drop for the show. We had the second floor, the center of which was the runway and podium and then there were two rooms off of it where the jewelry designers were all set up. When you walked into the room I was in, Manic Trout was the first thing you saw...I thought that was pretty awesome.

Austin Fashion Week Manic Trout 02As you can see, I was pretty happy with how the display turned out...not bad for starting from scratch...I did miss my glass blocks though.

Austin Fashion Week Manic Trout 03Those images are Manic Trout in the press...it looked impressive shown all at once and I think a better display than the usual binders that I had been using.  The whole night was a whirlwind of new faces and the fashion elite of Austin.  Business cards were changing hands in a blur and the swarm of press and the fashion elite was intoxicating.  At one point during the evening I was even interviewed for the CW Austin!

Austin Fashion Week Manic Trout 04Being set up around the room was only the tip of the iceberg though...the highlight of the event (and the part that made me want to throw up when I thought about it) was the presentation part of the evening.  Each designer had 3-5 minutes to give a speech and 4 models to show jewelry on.  I was editing my speech and trying to mentally slow myself down up until the last second I got up on that stage.

Austin Fashion Week Manic Trout 1It went well...although the lights went off in the middle for no reason and it caused me to stumble over my words for a second, but both the lights and my speaking ability quickly recovered!  I finished up with..."I am excited to share that even though at the moment my life is trapped somewhere in transit inside of a moving container, as of this week, Manic Trout officially calls Austin, Texas home!" which received such a loud applause and shouts from the audience that the co-coordinator asked me when I stepped down and returned back stage what I said to receive the loudest applause of the night.  It felt good.

Trunk Show

Stissing Show

Le Shopping at The Stissing House

Part of the rebranding this year was to make myself known better among the local crowd.  Mainly because I feel very strongly about community, such as hiring from within mine instead of outsourcing and being an active part of it myself...but also because they all seem to be pretty interested when they hear about Manic Trout.  One way to do this has been to be involved in the few local shows which have been gaining popularity among local shoppers.  I was part of the pop up Community Day show in Millbrook, I had a Trunk Show this fall and this past weekend, I was part of Le Shopping at The Stissing House in Pine Plains.

I have to admit that this past week end at Le Shopping may have changed my views on doing shows...which had been that I would participate in as few as possible.  I now however think that shows once you are established are an entirely different ball game then when you are just starting out.

At this point, I finally figured out how I like to be set up, so its much less stressful to plan and execute.  If I have a system and a plan, I feel much more comfortable doing something.  I by now have a local customer and fan base, which means if nothing else, I will be visited by familiar and friendly faces.  I also get to meet people who have read about me via press of heard of me word of mouth which is always nice.  This past show I met a women who heard about the show but had no idea I would be there,  as it turns out has been a website customer of mine for about 4 years and was so excited to see me there!  It was really wonderful to meet her in person, how cool is that??

Besides meeting people, I get great feedback on what people do and don't like...its an awesome way to see the interaction while shopping that you never see online!  It also is a great way to push the website..."If you prefer to shop online, I have a large and easy to use website and shipping is only $3!"  Many cards were taken after hearing this and you know what? After the second day, two of the shoppers from the show had already fanned the facebook page and I had a message from one!

Community Day 2010

Millbrook Community Day Pop-up Shop

My favorite part of this past show was however the vendors.   I was in a cluster with a few other shops and we were all from such varied backgrounds! One sells almost exclusively wholesale (and also just started doing local shows!), one works for a designer and is starting out herself and one is becoming known on Etsy. I had such a wonderful time chatting with them! We shared experiences and advice and basically talked creative business all weekend during the lulls. That was Heaven. I will do more shows for that reason alone.

At the moment I have no other shows in the calendar, but I will be sure to keep you up to date as they will slowly ease their way into my life. In 2012, I am even starting to wrap my head around my first trade show as I was greatly encouraged by this group to do so.  A whole new chapter is opening in the land of Manic Trout!

The Trunk Show this past weekend was a success!

Tamarack Trunk Show 01

I set up in the library at Tamarack (a members only shooting club in Millbrook).  I took these during the day, and meant to snap more that night but was so busy I forgot, oops!

Tamarack Trunk Show 02

I skipped my usual medly of plates as it looks too busy with all of the colors of the plates themselves, and at the last show everyone kept thinking I made candy rather then jewelry.  I'm glad I decided to do so, I really much prefer the cleaner look of just the ivory linens....although I did still use props!  From around the club I gathered horns, antlers and lets not ignore...

Tamarack Trunk Show 03

...the Crocodile head!  My step father had the idea to put the rings on his teeth and nose, a cute touch that attracted a lot of attention.

Tamarack Trunk Show 04

During the show, Berkshire Mountain Distillers joined Manic Trout and set up a bar outside of the library.  Their Vodka, Gin, Rum and Whiskey were all a big hit and they are located only a few towns over in Great Barrington, MA.  I highly recommend you check them out!

Tamarack Trunk Show 05

It was the first time I really saw everything all laid out in a while...there is ALOT to check out over at Manic Trout right now!

Tamarack Trunk Show 06

Over all, the show was great fun...thank you to all who came out to support Manic Trout!!

Manic Trout Trunk Show - October 2010Come and check out Manic Trout pretties and try a spirited treat from Berkshire Mountain Distillers!

Saturday, October 9th 4-8pm at Tamarack Preserve in Millbrook.

Hope to see you there!!

Apparently Pop-Up shops are all the rage these days.  After being invited to participate in one for Millbrook Community Day this past weekend, I can see why.  There is a beautiful space for rent on the first corner of the village as you enter main street.  It was recently renovated as a 4500 sq ft gallery space with 12 windows on prime village real estate.  Sadly, the gallery recently closed but good for me as the local paper decided to ask 5 non village store front shops if they wanted a window and table for Community Day.  I decided why the heck not and gave it a go!

Excuse my sad photo, but I had to take a photo of my window.  I had to work with a built in display, but it ended up being the perfect back drop for lots of pink and oodles of Critter Necklaces.  I sadly was not tall enough to take a proper photo...oops!  There are two glass blocks behind the bust with necklaces draped over them...you'll just have to take my word for it that it looked awesome.  Note the first showing of the new logo!

It was a great day, perfect weather and there were oodles of Millbrookians wandering around.  So wonderful to see so many familiar faces, friends and fans!  I made tons of new acquaintances and even met a few local peeps who knew all about Manic Trout and had been wanting to meet me in person, how cool is that!  All in all a successful day which made me so happy once again, to be part of the Millbrook community!
