The other day I was having a conversation with Adam about great love stories...and about the best having to do with acceptance of a persons past and being drawn to each other.  Well not just drawn to each other, but realizing when a person is your other half...the perfect fit...that they get you more than anyone else.   A person who not only accepts your quirks, but embraces them...and who even if pushed away, will fight for you.

I hardly had to pause before declaring that Secretary fits that perfectly and I in fact took it one step further...I think Secretary is the best love story ever made.  The reaction I received however was more amazement that of all the movies out there, that this is what I consider a great love story...so I am taking it you my dear friends and asking you to weigh in.

My defense: You have two people who are perfect for each other...and they had no idea until they met what that even meant.  They are so perfect for each that they become the best versions of themselves in each other presence...even if they are a little twisted.  Secretary illustrates that true love is not about normalcy, its about loving one another even more for the oddness and the off kilter aspects of one another.  You then bring into play the devotion and loyalty aspect, the tenderness and then toss in the kink, why its a modern day fairy tale!

So have you seen Secretary?  Do you agree or disagree with me on this, and if you disagree...what's your favorite love story, I would love to hear!

Being sick on the couch does have its advantages...one being that you get to watch hour upon of hour of movies guilt free.  Saturday I spent the entire evening cuddling with Faye, sipping tea and watching movies...it was however not a total waste of time as I composed a list of what I learned from my sick day...

  1. Never get involved with a guy who tells you right off the bat that he’s bad news, you’re too good for him but no one will ever love you like he does. (Riding in Cars With Boys)
  2. Even if you make all the wrong decisions in life, such as getting pregnant and married at 15, you can still grow up and write a book about it...and then have it made into a movie. (Riding in Cars With Boys)
  3. The guy your mom picks for you is most likely not the man of your dreams. (Because I Said So)
  4. Always go with the guy who you feel the most comfortable with, makes you laugh the hardest and who you have the most fun with.  (Because I Said So)
  5. Moms & sisters talk waaaaay more graphically about their sex lives in movies then they do in real life. (Because I Said So)
  6. You can meet a total stranger and fall in love with them in 3 days. (Dan in Real Life)
  7. Your brother will still love you if you steal his girl. (Dan in Real Life)
  8. There is such a thing as more than one love of your life. (Dan in Real Life)
  9. Even red meat eating, scotch drinking, work obsessed girls who don’t want kids can find love. (How I Met Your Mother)
  10. Gay men in real life play the best hetero alpha males on tv. (How I Met Your Mother)

sleepless-in-seattle-1

Ah yes, it's February 14th.  I'm not one for Valentine's Day in general, and this year being single, I am pretty happy that I have such a busy day ahead of me...the kind of day where I go, go, go every over planned out minute of it.  I am booked until about 9pm, but I'm figuring that if my usual monthly post board meeting pow wow with friends is canceled due to the date, then I will come home and snuggle up with Faye and enjoy a themed flick.   As I only allow myself candy a few times a year, and Valentines day is one of those very special occasions, I also plan on treating myself to a pile of themed candy as well...although admittedly, I have already started in on the conversation hearts.  Not sure what I'll watch yet, but I narrowed my viewing choices down to my top 5...

  1. Sleepless in Seattle - Best Valentines Day movie, ever.
  2. An Affair to Remember - Responsible for Sleepless in Seattle.
  3. Valentine's Day - I adored Jessica Biels character.
  4. Say Anything - Do I really need to explain.
  5. Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown - Before it all got so complicated.

What's your favorite Valentine's Day flick?

I LOVE Sofia Coppola...of course I do, what surprise is there in that declaration?  Marie Antoinette has been one of the most creatively influential films I have ever seen (approx 15 times at that).  It will also then be no surprise that I cannot wait for her next creation Somewhere to debut on December 22.  Perfect timing as all of my holiday orders will be shipped out and I can sneak away to go and see it immediately!!

What upcoming cinematic event has you all excited?

I've been immersing myself in the life of designers recently...I have Seamless on right now while working in my studio.  It has my favorite quote about the industry ever...

"[Fashion] is the only industry where you can be perceived to be successful and not make money because a lot of the success is because of the hype from the press."

Speaking of designers from Seamless...

“I often wonder, sometimes I think the people who buy our clothes live in a parallel universe. Hell, we can’t even afford our clothes.”

- Fashion designer Lazaro Hernandez, of Proenza Schouler, points out that he and Jack McCollough cannot afford their own label’s high-end, pricey clothes.

Fashion.  Gotta love it...

My sister Gillian has always gone to the movies by herself...not to say that she doesn't go with friends as well, its simply that if she wants to see a movie and no ones around to join her, she just goes.  I have followed suit a few times and agree its a pretty great way to go...I get a cup of coffee, sit wherever I want, don't have to deal with anyone trying to talk to me and just get lost in whatever I'm seeing.  Its been ages however since I've taken myself to a movie...since Where The Wild Things Are in fact.  I like matinees the best...there is something a bit decadent and naughty to run off by yourself to the movies in the middle of the day.

The question however is...what should I see???

I'll admit that I watch movies over, and over, and over again.  Some for fun, some for sentimental reason and some because they continue to inspire me endlessly.  At the top of this list is Marie Antoinette, every time I watch it, there seems to be something new to rev my creative engines...just look at all of that pink tulle!!!

well...I really only want her clothes...or rather access to Colleen Atwood's Costume skills...seriously though I almost couldn't follow the movie as I was so enraptured by her dresses.  Have you seen Alice In Wonderland yet?  Worth checking out for the clothes alone...but Tim Burton as usual did a phenomenal job and it was great to see the film both on the big screen and in 3d!

The dress Alice wears in the real world is beautiful and all, but it's a period dress from Alice time and as pretty as it is, its nothing we haven't seen before...

After Alice shrinks she fashions this little number out of I think her slip...clever girl that Alice is...

After her encounter with the Mad Hatter, her creation becomes a bit too big again and the talented mad man whips up this creation...

empire waist, flowing skirt and look at that bodice and bow...swoon...

Of course that girl likes her altering substances and very soon grows too big for her wee bits. The red queen takes a liking to her and has her outfitted in a divine confection of tulle that I swear I gasped at when Alice appeared in it in all its 3d glory!!!

look at those raw edges and the light as air effect, so delightful...

I sadly can not locate a good photo of the tunic Alice wears with the white queen, but I loved that she was put into such a different look then the girly dresses...if anyone can find an image of it, please let me know

The piece de resistance was of course the armor...its fantastic! My friend Olesia whom I saw the movie with looked over at me in her goofy 3d glasses and said she had a feeling there was necklace inspiration in that one for me...and she might be right...

Last but not least is that coat, oh that coat!!! I have a thing for coats and this one is divine...I want it.

If you want to learn more about the costumes I found a pretty good site that goes into detail about them...check it out here.

As excited as I am about Burtons Alice In Wonderland...I'll admit I am a bit more thrilled that Spike Jonze is bringing Where The Wild Things Are to life...I LOVED this book, in fact I still have my well worn copy from childhood (I was a bibliophile from day one...an anti social tot who started reading in nursery school) and only have to wait until October to see it!

As a cgr graduate and a longtime fan of both Alice in Wonderland and Tim Burton, I am pretty intrigued to see this film...and these photos have me chomping at the bit...

I recently have had the patience of a mosquito...so the wait until March is going to be absolute torture...
