I have had to resist the urge to curl up in a ball and go to sleep for about every second of the past few days.  Before I moved to Austin I kept telling people that I would have a day job again because when I don't I tend to spiral into pits of depression when I hole up in my studio alone for too many days on end and I need to force myself to get out and do things.  But then I got here and had a chance to really focus on Manic Trout and taking it to the next level.  Which is awesome...until I start to spiral.  Ugh.  I have a ton to do though to get ready for the holiday season...do you realize how close Christmas is??? Yeah, we won't go there right now.

Right now I am focusing on getting inventory to at least a normal level and making sure all my ducks are in a row.  And Advertising.  I hate creating Ads.  In the past, I have had others do a few for me...but I have a bit of an advertising background and the skills to do it...and all the stuff is right in front of me...so I'm doing it.  But I don't like it.  This may be some of the spiral inducing matter in my life right now.  Must. Resist. Curling. Into. Ball.

On a random side note...I have the heat on, in TEXAS!  It feels so indulgent!  It also was about 55 in my apartment when I got up this morning and that is no bueno!  Its kind of amusing how heat works here in the south...it comes out of the ceiling vents...which are put there to make cooling the place down a quick task, but let me tell you, I am so happy that I ignored the scoffs and brought my ll bean sheep skin "wicked good slippers" with me, because the bare floors are FREEZING here when its cold (ahem, under 65 out)!  Brrrrrrr.

Sunday was the Doctor's Without Borders Fundraiser at the Bull and The Buddha in Poughkeepsie.  I donated a necklace to the silent auction today and I found out this morning that it actually went for more then the retail price!  I actually went to the event and it was a lovely turn out, with 4 live bands.  You can see more info here. It made me want to go and check out Bull and Buddha again for a girls night very soon!

SummerLine

glimpse of what's in the works for the summer line

The past few weeks have just blown by in a rush of...well I don't know what.  I've been busy.  My "other" job has me planning a handful of events coming up in the next few weeks and  I have been working my tushy off trying to get the Summer line (which is REALLY late) finished.  I got all caught up in a tizzy of design and expanded the thing so hugely that I had to not only wait for supplies, but am still making samples.  I wanted to have it all finished and to my publicist two days ago, but as I still need to finish samples, photo them, name them, price them and make line sheets...well its going to be another week, at least.  The only good part is that I am madly in love with what I designed, is that bad to say?  Well even if it is, I'm saying it.   I also have a trunk show in two weeks and feel so unprepared, but honestly I know I am much more prepared then I think on that one...I just do so few shows that I am always overwhelmed at the thought of them.

Besides work, the board I serve on has two events coming up in April which I am involved in planning, not much has to be done, but all of a sudden I have multiple events to either run or attend every week end in April.  Why is everything in April?  Some I am looking forward to more then others, such as both causes which I support and donate auction items to are having events, so its more networking then anything else, I'm actually excited about them.  Gillian and I are going to Austin to visit Holly for three nights to check out her new home, yay!!!   I also have a meet up with my Ladies Who Launch group in Manhattan, I havn't seen those girls in so long, I can't wait!!

In the midst of all of this, the website I took over last year and have somehow put off redoing, basically a local directory for the village I live in, needs to be finished now, as in yesterday.  Honestly though, I can't even think about that right now, as I am smack dab in the middle of a six week online business class which I decided at the last minute to enroll in.  I actually am totally into it, and part of the class is networking with the 520 students online, and well...we know how I feel about making new friends!

Speaking of which, I have made a lovely new friend, Julia.  We were next to each other at a show I did for the holidays.  Julia makes the most awesome felted bags.  We talk shop endlessly, I heart our new friendship.  I have also recently acquired a an email pen pal, and we write long emails back and forth venting about business, its quite nice actually.  I have been really lucky to have connected with a couple of wonderful women this year, its making the endless hours I toil away at Manic Trout and all of this other stuff seem less crazy.  You know why, because these chicks get it...and they're doing it too.

BlackCoffee

I can't even count how many times I have been in the midst of busy times and said to myself "self, why on earth were you not more productive in all of these projects you keep thinking up when it was slow?? There is no time now you ninny!".  I admit, there are certain tasks that cannot be done when business is slow, as some require sales to need them...but then there is the category of, lets call it...cool things I wish to do that are not necessary but I think would make Manic Trout a better place.   Well, as its not quite Valentines day shopping yet and due to all of this snow and a sudden blank spot in my social life, I have nothing but time on my hands right now.  So this week I have been working on a few of these projects!!

First, I cleaned out the studio a bit...but that's just good old common sense.  Then I cleaned out the inventory...which means that there is a SALE going on!  I finally got around to putting the new labels on all of the jewelry...well, my assistant has, but its getting done!  I got around to posting the spring fashion preview on the blog and updated the press page on the website and facebook page.

I (and its about time) started to tackle the redoing of Millbrook NY Online, which I took over this past Spring and have just been patching up the holes since then.  It however needs a bit of an overhaul and I dug right in the other day!  This one will take some time, but at least I got started.

My proudest accomplishment this week was going through the Out & About photos and starting to add model images to the jewelry on the web site.  I have been putting this off FOREVER!!!  The best part of this project is that I started it to plan for the 2011 Out & About series!!  That's right my dear friends...in a few short weeks, the first Out & About of this year will debut...and it will be AWESOME!!  Which is great on a few levels...

  1. Out & Abouts are super fun to do.
  2. I have holes to fill for model shots
  3. I am always inspired after a photo shoots

ok...back to my coffee...must go to day job for a couple of hours and then yoga...no more fun projects until after I do all of this and get today's orders out.  Hmmm, I wonder which dream slow season project I'll tackle next??  On deck are a database of designs in use...including materials and blueprints.  I dipped my toe in that one..talk about a HUGE project.  I'll admit...it scares me a bit just thinking about that one.  Also up next is an online catalog/magazine of manic trout...fun!

Stissing Show

Le Shopping at The Stissing House

Part of the rebranding this year was to make myself known better among the local crowd.  Mainly because I feel very strongly about community, such as hiring from within mine instead of outsourcing and being an active part of it myself...but also because they all seem to be pretty interested when they hear about Manic Trout.  One way to do this has been to be involved in the few local shows which have been gaining popularity among local shoppers.  I was part of the pop up Community Day show in Millbrook, I had a Trunk Show this fall and this past weekend, I was part of Le Shopping at The Stissing House in Pine Plains.

I have to admit that this past week end at Le Shopping may have changed my views on doing shows...which had been that I would participate in as few as possible.  I now however think that shows once you are established are an entirely different ball game then when you are just starting out.

Tamarack Trunk Show

Trunk Show at Tamarack Preserve

At this point, I finally figured out how I like to be set up, so its much less stressful to plan and execute.  If I have a system and a plan, I feel much more comfortable doing something.  I by now have a local customer and fan base, which means if nothing else, I will be visited by familiar and friendly faces.  I also get to meet people who have read about me via press of heard of me word of mouth which is always nice.  This past show I met a women who heard about the show but had no idea I would be there,  as it turns out has been a website customer of mine for about 4 years and was so excited to see me there!  It was really wonderful to meet her in person, how cool is that??

Besides meeting people, I get great feedback on what people do and don't like...its an awesome way to see the interaction while shopping that you never see online!  It also is a great way to push the website..."If you prefer to shop online, I have a large and easy to use website and shipping is only $3!"  Many cards were taken after hearing this and you know what? After the second day, two of the shoppers from the show had already fanned the facebook page and I had a message from one!

Community Day 2010

Millbrook Community Day Pop-up Shop

My favorite part of this past show was however the vendors.   I was in a cluster with a few other shops and we were all from such varied backgrounds! One sells almost exclusively wholesale (and also just started doing local shows!), one works for a designer and is starting out herself and one is becoming known on Etsy. I had such a wonderful time chatting with them! We shared experiences and advice and basically talked creative business all weekend during the lulls. That was Heaven. I will do more shows for that reason alone.

At the moment I have no other shows in the calendar, but I will be sure to keep you up to date as they will slowly ease their way into my life. In 2012, I am even starting to wrap my head around my first trade show as I was greatly encouraged by this group to do so.  A whole new chapter is opening in the land of Manic Trout!

I've been thinking a great deal about the busy times of business recently.  Manic Trout follows the basic patterns of retail shopping, I get busier leading up to holidays and March and July are the slowest months of the year.  The busiest is hands down what I realize to be only about three weeks of absolute chaos before Christmas.  It's almost my favorite time of year.  What I prefer though is the week before it hits.  The anticipation as I (hopefully!) watch the press roll in and prepare the site and studio so they are in tip top shape to be part of the behind the scenes that make the holidays special is pretty adrenaline pumping.  I haven't been able to fall asleep all week.  I've also gone back and forth with my worried ramblings between "What if I'm not busy" and "What if I'm too busy" to the bf so many times that he just smiles at me as I continue on like a broken record, muttering both sides to myself every day or so.

I feel like yesterday was the first day to kick off the season for me, orders have been coming in for gifts for a few weeks, but all of a sudden a spike in stats has occurred and orders have multiplied over night.  Its really intense when all of a sudden your business increases 300% in one day and there's a mixed emotions of "YES!", Happy Dance time and "UH-OH", panic mode.  I'm crossing my fingers that it is a bit crazy this year though and I have to admit that I can't wait for it to be insane.  It's kinda of like...oh dear god, here it comes...and away we go!!!

For the purpose of this post, I am referring to definition #1, as I would not call myself #2:

Dork (Urban Dictionary)
1. Someone who has odd interests, and is often silly at times. A dork is also someone who can be themselves and not care what anyone thinks.
You are such a dork.

2. (n)a whale penis
The blue whale has the biggest dork on earth

I have always been a huge fan of to-do lists and I LOVE planners.  However, the Mac/Blackberry compatibility issues have been a huge pain in my ass for the past few years.  I have been trying to find an effective way to organize the many facets of my life that works as well as my filo fax used to.  Unfortunately, past methods have deleted info, not synced properly or just plain didn't work for me.  I however have renewed passion to accomplish this feat after hearing that iphones will FINALLY be coming to Verizon next year.  If you know this to not be true, please keep it to yourself, this hope gets me through the night.  Anyway, I decided that even if the iphone does not come about, I have to do something different. Wallpapering my desktop with virtual sticky notes was getting overwhelming and I was not able to sync them with my phone properly, so it was becoming more of a hindrance then useful.   About a month ago I reached my breaking point and started researching a better way.  I found a few options, but nothing great. Then I found Things, oh wonderful, awesome, amazing Things.  Software actually exists that behaves the way I naturally think and organize.  Its fantastic.  Everything I want to be able to do with my to-do's is possible.  And its only $50.  And I will be able to use it with an iphone (and an ipad...which I think I may buy for myself early next year, but the reason why is for another post).  So after reading numerous forums and reviews, I have discovered that with Things and using iCal better, I have found task management mecca!

We have not gotten to the dork part yet though...here it is...I spent every single free minute this weekend inputting all of my to-lists into Things.  Saturday night, I came home from the restaurant at 11:30pm and sat down (with my coat on!) to just add a few things and next thing I knew, it was 2am my nose about an inch from my screen and I still had my coat on!!  But, its done...and its not only awesome, I am all set to start off Monday (my favorite day of the week) with my system all in place.  Its like the best Monday ever!!!

That was where I dorked out, in case you missed that.

I have been incredibly immersed in work this week and therefore rather appreciative of those around me with the same mentality.   Here are the posts that I enjoyed the most and I hope you do too...

Light Tent 2

I didn't realize how much jewelry I have designed that needed to be photographed until I started getting it all out today!  Much of it is for 2011 such as the Peacock Blue Bling Rings, a new bracelet design and a new collection of critter necklaces.  But don't you fret...there are goodies coming out next week as well...just in time for the holidays!  Oh, so exciting!!

Sadly, the journey to the web site has just begun and I have a few weeks of work before they get to you, but the new goodies are scheduled to land on November 23rd! (make sure you're signed up for the newsletter on the right of the blog to be the first to find out and to be entered to win one of the new pieces in the monthly drawing!!)

light tent 1

Today was a photo day...which means I drag out the light tent, lights, tripod and accessories and get to work.  I will later tonight start on photo-shopping, and as I suck at photography this is a lengthy process for me.  After I make the photos presentable for both print and web, I put together the line sheets, figure out names, prices etc.   Once that's all done, I send the whole shebang off to the publicist along with both hi res and web images and a sample of each piece.

THEN I get to work on the web site, writing descriptions, uploading the images, doing a bit of seo and all of that good stuff...and voila...new jewelry for you!!
