The bad
It's an on going dilemma for those who blog to decide where to draw the line on what you share.  No one has a perfect life so you know if you read a blog full of purely sunshine and rainbows that you're only getting the good side.  However, as a blogger, as much as you don't want to only give the awesome, you also don't want to write posts full of gray skies and storms and be a total Debbie Downer.  Everyone loves to hear, share and celebrate good news, but the bad is tougher...not all parties involved in bad news want that news shared and sometimes you would just prefer to not talk about it...especially over the internet.

I'll admit that when blogs I regularly read open their lives to include readers in the bad, I feel amazed at their bravery to share whatever horribleness they are going through...and yet, I rarely do it myself.  I'm more of a crawl under the covers and cry in the shower type person and tend to hide from talking about the bad.  However unhealthy that may be.

I was on a panel this past week discussing Social Media and after  it was over, it got me thinking about a lot of issues such as this.  There are so many new factors cropping up each and every day to try and understand for not only personal but business reasons.  How do you feel about sharing bad news on your blog?  Do you do it?

I found a cool thing I never noticed before on Tumblr...the archive function!  It's pretty awesome to see every image I've collected over the past 6 months together...

Wow.  Overwhelming, but awesome.  Are you on Tumblr?  You can find me at manictrout.tumblr.com if you're so inclined...

After the blog fiasco finally ended yesterday and order was once again restored in the Daily Muse, you can imagine my trepidation when faced with a wordpress upgrade this morning.  I held my breath while it was happening.  All seems ok, there are a couple of changes that I am really enjoying...and there are a few that I am ultra curious about.

The combination of both wordpress and theme upgrade has brought about a few very new functions here...including being able to choose the format of each post!  Standard, aside, gallery, link, image, quote, status, video, audio, chat.  What this basically means is that I plan on playing around a bit in the next couple of days...be warned ;)

In all seriousness though, I have been so excited about the blog recently, but between my computer going to be fixed last week and the crash this week, I have been falling behind.  So hold onto your hats my pretties...I plan on making it up for my absence!

from we heart it

Ironically, it was when I went in to post this image at 8:30 this morning that I upgraded the blog theme, causing a crash that I FINALLY have just fixed (at 11:54 pm), after calling my host and then pouring over forums to find out how to fix it.  I felt a bit like the house above, and the blog was in the same state.  I am so very thankful that I majored in an art that required me to take many, many classes in the engineering school, providing a background in computer languages which makes coding pretty easy for me, no matter how much I detest it.  Alas, its all better now...and I can stop holding my breath.

Open_Sketchbooks

Years and years of ideas and inspiration

I've kept a "sketch book" for as long as I can remember.  My best friend gave me a black bound version when I was in, I think the 5th grade and told me that her sister had a book like this for school.  It should be filled with things that inspire me.  Words, images, thoughts, anything really that tickled my fancy and made me want to create.  Her sister was much older then us and going to school for fashion design.  I thought she was so cool.  I immediately began to fill the pages and years later I still have that book and the many that I filled after that first one.

Sketchbook Spines

In art school I got into the habit of keeping a few versions...

  1. Page after page of photos ripped from magazines to inspire me when I was working (I still make these and keep them at arms length when I need a jolt of inspiration)
  2. Books with actual sketches of anything from figure drawing to projects I was working on. (I also still keep this version, now filled with jewelry and web site ideas)
  3. What I came to call my sketch book...photos, calendars, to do lists, notes, mementos, inspiring images, project notes, movies stubs...you name it.

When I began Manic Trout I pretty much continued that same 3 book concept, and oh was I filled with ideas!  I was filling the third version in three or four months at that time, starting the business and trying to figure out what I was doing.   Soon however technology shifted my perception a bit, I started relying on the computer more and more and it started ever so slowly, that I hardly noticed it.  Until about a year ago, when someone asked if I still carried around a sketchbook with me at all times.  I realized that not only did I not, but that I had unwittingly began a digital sketchbook of sorts though the blog instead.

SketchBook1

versions of the first category below are kept right next to the jewelry supplies

I didn't really think about it again, until a few months ago, I began to work on the blog a bit...thinking about the point of it and what I wanted to accomplish with it and I again came back to the concept that I was using my blog in place of what used to be my sketch book.  That made me really happy.  I had been so disappointed in myself for abandoning something that was such a part of me and that I adored so much, but now I see that really it had just evolved.  Even better, now I can share it.

Now that I realize what I have been doing sub consciously, I plan on making it a bit more obvious.  I will bring in more of what I missed from that 3rd kind of sketch book.  I also may share a few of the pages from sketch books past, because they are so dear to me.

SketchBook2

I keep versions of the second category of sketchbooks by my bed and in my bag

I was just going through the whole pile of them all and it was kind of strange traveling back through the years so vividly.  My journals were all thrown out after the last flood, but I wasn't that sad about it as I hated reading them years later.  The sketchbooks however show more then just what was going on in my life...they show what inspired me, what I was doing, what was on my mind and as cheesy as it sounds, in my heart for all those years.

Sketchbook 2003

A page from one of the third category of sketchbooks in 2003

It was kind of sad to see the courting and love story unfold between my ex husband and I...he is the king of little notes and sweet things like that, and so many are forever saved in those pages.  At the same time though, it now seems that maybe I was so caught up in the romance that I couldn't see what was so obvious...we always wanted such different lives right from the start.  Oh well, at least we did realize it and now both have the lives we desired and have grown from our mistakes.

My my, I am so wise this afternoon!  Well, before I get caught up in memory lane I will sign off.  I hope you enjoy this digital sketchbook of mine...and onward we go...

What’s in a name?

Over the past month or so, I have been working more and more on my blog.  I realized last year that I no longer keep an "inspiration book" (which I is what I kept as my sketch books for years) any longer.   It seemed that I had instead begun using the blog as my inspiration book.  During the rebranding, I started thinking about what I wanted the focus of this blog to be.  What was the point?  Who were my target readers?  Yadda yadda, yadda.  Well, I am trying still to figure all of this out, but I do know that the Daily Muse posts are the dearest to me.  They essential are what my sketchbooks were.  I also know that its time to give the blog a name of its own.  Its own legs to stand on if you will.

The question is....what do I name it?  I'm thinking Manic Moments, as well, if you've ever met me, that would make sense of my life...but I am open to suggestions or thoughts.  Any ideas?

I read a great deal of blogs everyday...well I peruse a great deal anyway...and this week I thought I would share a few of the highlights of what I read...

My new obsession is the blog Crafting an MBA, which I consider blog-crack and I wait with baited antisipation everyday for a new post. Today's guest post is perfection on a topic dear to my heart: go local - tips for finding support in your community

...etc is an outstanding source for eye candy Wednesday's post did not disappoint: 346

I love reading Hula Seventy, specifically a project the author, Andrea is working on this year where she posts a list every week: list eight: guiltiest pleasures is delightful!

Emersonmade's blog did indeed bring: Sunshine on A Cloudy Day on a dreary Monday (also my birthday!) this week.

Mrs. French was the guest blogger over at SF Girl By Bay today and brought with her oodles of: blissful inspiration!

Last but not least, From Betsy with Love had a post on Florence & The Machine whom I also am loving these days...yay!

Happy reading and Enjoy the weekend!!!

I have been a social media networking fool this past week end...it all started with teh snow storm on Friday when I had a few extra hours in my schedule due to weather related cancellations.  I got REALLY into twitter...I can see how if used a bit smarter it can be not only a pretty cool tool, but also pretty fun!  I then started to explore LinkedIn some more...not 100% into yet, but getting there!

If you have not laready and would like too...check out the Manic Trout Fan Page, Manic Trout Group and Sierra Bailey on FaceBook, Twitter and Linked In!

I also wanted to give a bit of BlogRoll Love today and tell you that I found the most incredible blog ever, I was so excited that I had problems focusing to read...its that good!  If you have a creative business, you MUST go and check out Crafting an MBA...hey, why are you still here?

It was brought to my attention last night by the lovely Nyla of Cherry Coloured that my blog has not been allowing comments for a while now..as in a couple of months...doh! I must have accidentally checked something in the back end...but have no fear, you may comment your hearts out again!!! The really good part of all of this was that I felt a bit rejected about the lack of comments, so I was pretty pleased to discover that there was something to blame other then not being loved...

I was so excited to discover that two fantastic blogs wrote about Manic Trout and yours truly today!!!

The Daily Obsession featured the Let's Stay Together Necklaces and Simply Hue did an overview of Manic Trout!

Thank you Ladies, they look amazing!
